there taking away alet lane. >>> at the top of the hour it is all the about hurricane earl. as howard told us the storm is moving by the outer banks. this is what it looks like in atlantic beach, north carolina. a lot of towns were evacuated ahead of the storm. the delmarva is bracing for a brush with earl later this afternoon. how are things looking right now? >> well, we somewhere are just starting to feel the tropical afcs. the wind has picked up. close to gale gale force. an the winds off the ocean has a tropical feel. so we know something is close but as howard reported really primetime for earl on the delmarva peninsula is yet to come. probably in the mid to late morning. although officials here in ocean city think it will be over by 3:00. even so, this has been an exercise in preparedness. the big gates on the sea walls slammed shut. the final preparations for keeping a menacing surf from destroying the boardwalk as earl pushes close. >> i'm excited actually. >> we're definitely going to stay. >> reporter: they put up fencing to prevent drifting sand from burying parking lots an the bo

hitting ocean city is good. it's early morning hours and by the afternoon it will be a thought and give us an opportunity to clean up and get ready for the rest of the weekend. >> reporter: so the preparations are in place here in ocean city for tropical storm conditions. now it's up to earl. that's the situation here on delmarva beaches bruce leshan is standing by in virginia beach farther south. >> reporter: scott, we're just about 20 miles from the northern edge of the hurricane warning line here in virginia beach. we're expecting gale force winds overnight but i'll tell you what, there are still people out on the beach. in fact somebody just got married out on the beach. and it is looking more and more like hurricane earl will pass us here in virginia beach about 150 miles off shore. a cacophony of hurricane words on the beach and dead quiet in the emergency center. they are hoping earl slips by in the dark without waking the neighbors. but people here are haunted by the spector of hurricane bonnie in 1998. forecasters had predicted she had spared virginia beach too. but her high winds

it looks like some rain is close to us but not here in the metro. on live doppler 9000 hd, this is where we are seeing the light rains across the northern neck, reedville, tappahannock, newland, st. mary's city seeing light sprinkles. the charity golf tournament at swan point will be okay. this will not be a problem for you but for the area beaches we are looking at tropical storm warnings and winds potentially 45 at ocean city, 35 to 40 at rijo both as this is far enough off shore to give a glancing blow from the hurricane. let's talk about the temperatures. temperatures have stayed up. in the 70s almost everywhere. culpeper at 70. we are 78. air quality is code yellow. mostly cloudy and 88 at noon. 87 for the drive home. around 90, which is cooler than the last few days and a slight chance of a shower with a front this evening. the weekend forecast is coming up in ten minutes. right now it is traffic time. >>> good morning, everybody. right now already dealing with the first accident of the morning and it comes from virginia. southbound 95. watch for it at backlick road. we are losing two
on the streets. what more can you tell us? >> eight people were transported to the hospital. five to the burn unit and one with a child. two people are in critical condition. i want to show you the scene down the street here. there are still some fire crews inside the building. it's an eight-story apartment building and they believe it started on the fifth floor. everyone is out of the building. firefighters say they have it under control but there are still hot spots. they believe the fire started in a common area. they had to use ladders to rescue people. >> i walked out and saw black smoke just like over, covering the ceiling and then like that black smoke like there was orange flames reflecking off of it. it was so hot one person had to jump out of a window. that's one of the people in critical condition. they don't know if that person will pull through. reporting live in northwest washington, lindsey mastis, 9 news now. >>> we are hoping to learn more from police about the deadly shooting on u and 88th -- 11th street northwest. it happened during the middle of the day. police say at leas
. that shooting spree may have been motivated by an attempt to silence a witness. this car may have been used. two men have been taken into custody at the same address, one earlier today, one tonight. police have also recovered some weapons there, but it's not known if they were used in today's shooting spree. that gun battle happened around noon at the funeral services for murder victim ashley mccreigh. among the 600 people, rival gang members. >> suspects opened fire on the individuals in that car. >> reporter: the victims may have returned fire themselves before fleeing at high speed in this dodge durango, but they clipped this mercedes and then crashed into a parked van. inside the dodge, one man survived. another did not. it's not clear if he was killed by gunshots or the crash. 9news now has learned the identity of the dead man. he is jamal kotts of northwest ds. he has known jamal for years and the man known as big pon was running scared. >> he's been very worried. he witnessed the shooting that was on mozart beach a month to a month half ago. >> he was scared for his life? >> he was defini
